7 Common Mistakes When Praying
1. Understanding the power and purpose of prayer
"How lovely is Your tabernacle, O Lord of hosts! My soul longs, yes, even faints For the courts of the Lord; My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God." (Psalm 84:1-2)
2. Call upon our Heavenly Father
We must know and call upon the name of the One who we are praying to. If's not just what you pray, but who you're praying to.
"Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, '“Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”' So He said to them, '“When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven."' (Luke 11:1-2)
"Call to Me and I will answer you, and I will tell you great and mighty things, which you do not know." (Jeremiah 33:3)
3. Praying with unbelief or doubt
If we pray with doubt or unbelief, we can't expect to receive anything from the Lord. Prayer is powerful when you pray in faith with no doubting.
"Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them." (Mark 11:24)
"But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind." (James 1:6)
4. Praying without faith
Faith is what moves mountains.
"But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him." (Hebrews 11:6)
5. Praying my will and not Thy will
When Jesus was in the garden of Gethsemane before He was delivered over to death, He prayed not for His will to be done but God's will. Stop praying prayers that are all about you and not in alignment with God's will
"He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, '“O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.”' (Matthew 26:39)
6. Not praying in the Spirit
"Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." (Romans 8:26)
7. Not praying in Jesus' name
When we ask for something to be done it must be asked for in the name of Jesus. There is power in the name of Jesus.
"And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it." (John 14:13-14)
