7 Ways to Truly Have a Humble Heart for God

"But He gives more grace. Therefore He says:

'God resists the proud,

But gives grace to the humble.'” (James 4:6)

What does it truly take to have a humble heart for God? As followers of Christ, God checks our hearts in every aspect of our lives. Jesus has first commanded us to love Him with all our heart, with all our soul and with all our mind. (Matthew 22:37) For He gives grace to the humble and that those who humble themselves will be exalted. (Matthew 23:12) When we truly have a humble heart to serve the Lord, the reverence and honor to seek God in our lives will magnify through us.

Here are ways to deepen your understanding by having a humble heart for God:

1) A humble heart has a dependence on God.

"I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing." (John 15:5)

2) A humble heart trembles before God’s word.

“For all those things My hand has made, And all those things exist," Says the Lord. “But on this one will I look: On him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, And who trembles at My word." (Isaiah 66:2)

3) A humble heart lets go of things that are not of God.

"So I said:

“'Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The Lord of hosts.'” (Isaiah 6:5)

4) A humble heart is willing to embrace Christ’s strength in weakness.

"And He said to me, “'My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.'” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

5) A humble heart has the fruit of obedience.

"For he held fast to the Lord; he did not depart from following Him, but kept His commandments, which the Lord had commanded Moses." (2 Kings 18:6)

6) A humble heart serves others as well.

"Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others." (Philippians 2:4)

7) A humble heart accepts the role of a servant.

"Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also." (John 15:20)
