What Does The Bible Say About Oil?

What does the bible say about oil?

Oil symbolizes the presence and the power of God.
We see oil is used to anoint people in the bible.

A great story about oil also happened with the miracle that took place with Elisha & the woman who was a widow.

1 A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.”

2 So Elisha said to her, “What shall I do for you? Tell me, what do you have in the house?” And she said, “Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil.”

3 Then he said, “Go, borrow vessels from everywhere, from all your neighbors—empty vessels; do not gather just a few. 4 And when you have come in, you shall shut the door behind you and your sons; then pour it into all those vessels, and set aside the full ones.”

5 So she went from him and shut the door behind her and her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured it out. 6 Now it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.”

And he said to her, “There is not another vessel.” So the oil ceased. 7 Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debt; and you and your sons live on the rest.” (2 Kings 4:1-7)

Here are the 3 significances of oil while studying the bible

#1 Pressed

Olives were pressed to produce olives.
Theres that moment when Jesus was in the garden of Gethsemane.

Gethsemane means 'an oil press'.

Theres so much to receive from Jesus hanging in the garden of Gethsemane right before his crucifixion.

We need to understand there may be a pressing when God wants to use us.

#2 Power

Oil is used to power the lamps back in the day.
20 “And you shall command the children of Israel that they bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to cause the lamp to [a]burn continually. (Exodus 27:20)

There is power in having heaven's oil.

#3 Presence

Oil is a symbol of God's presence.
But also His presence would come after David was anointed by prophet Samuel.
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah. (1 Samuel 16:13)

Praise God!
Thank you Lord for pouring heaven's fresh oil unto your children.

5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.(Psalm 23:5)

God bless you!
