What Is The Soul and the Importance of it Biblically

What is the soul?
The soul is our mind, will & emotions.

4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. (Deuteronomy 6:4)

Soul in Hebrew is nehpes which means 'living being.

37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. (Matthew 22:37-38)

Soul in Greek is psyche which means 'breath'.

As we continue to study the meaning of the soul, we learn that our soul has an important role according to the bible.
Again, it consists of the mind, will & emotions.

The bible tells us to renew our mind.

2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:2)

We are called to follow the Fathers will.

Will in its simplest form means 'desires'.
39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” (Matthew 26:39)

The bible teaches us to also be a manager of our emotions by being filled with the spirit.

18 And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, (Ephesians 5:18)

Here are 3 things God wants us to do with our soul.

#1 God wants you to worship Him with all your soul

37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. (Matthew 22:37-38)

#2 God wants to restore your soul

3 He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake. (Psalm 23:3)

#3 God wants us to commit our soul to Him

19 Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator. (1 Peter 4:19)
Lastly lets meditate what Psalm 62 says about our soul...
1 Truly my soul silently waits for God;
From Him comes my salvation.
2 He only is my rock and my salvation;
He is my defense;
I shall not be greatly moved. (Psalm 62:1-2)

5 My soul, wait silently for God alone,
For my expectation is from Him.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation;
He is my defense;
I shall not be moved.
7 In God is my salvation and my glory;
The rock of my strength,
And my refuge, is in God. (Psalm 62:5-7)
